The Dachstein experience

Climbing, long-distance hiking and the largest karst surface

Climbing and long-distance hiking, great adventures to be experienced on the Dachstein. Mountaineers, hikers and climbing professionals will find one of the most beautiful landscapes here in the mountains of Ramsau am Dachstein. It is the ideal starting point for numerous mountain tours. Immediately several hiking trails and alpine tours start from the Dachstein Glacier. The Dachstein Mountains are the largest closed karst area in Austria and cover a total area of around 770 km².

 

The marked path network takes you through unique natural scenery with wonderful views of the Schladminger Tauern and the Krippenstein in Obertraun. Rough Dachstein limestone, mountain pines, cirques and karst hollows characterize the wide “Landschaft am Stein” at 2000 m.

Via ferratas and climbing on the Dachstein

The Dachstein experience is a real treat for mountaineers and alpinists. Unique and striking, the Dachstein massif casts a spell over everyone. With over 20 different via ferratas, Ramsau am Dachstein also offers the 1st via ferrata in the Alps on the Hoher Dachstein and is considered the cradle of via ferratas. The Dachstein south face 850 meters, dropping almost vertically and imposing at the same time. It was climbed for the first time in 1909 by the two Steiner brothers. Today the Steinerweg belongs to the traditional routes. The challenging climbing route through the cliff face has not lost any of its difficulty and appeal. The perfect mountain for sport climbing, alpine day tours, trekking tours on rock and ice and via ferratas.

Climbing conditions Dachsteinkalk:

The Dachstein limestone, light gray to whitish in color, is the most common type of rock in the Northern Limestone Alps. Formed around 220 million years ago by deposits of shells and skeletons from a wide variety of marine life. The Dachstein Riffkalk is perfect as a climbing rock and offers all levels of difficulty, from easy to extremely difficult.

Security on the mountain and the necessary techniques have the highest priority. All via ferrata climbers in Ramsau am Dachstein can learn the most important basic techniques for climbing under the guidance of a state-certified mountain guide. All participants learn more about behavior on the via ferrata, tour planning and background information on climbing.
